Cream together the butter and sugar, then beat in the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition
Add the heavy cream, sweet potatoes, nuts, chocolate chips, ground cloves, baking powder, flour, vanilla extract, and lemon zest to the mixture; mix until just combined
Beat the egg whites until stiff peaks form, then fold them into the batter
Pour the batter into a 9-inch round cake pan that has been greased and floured
Bake for about 1 1/2 hours in a moderate oven (350°F)
Let cool completely before removing from the pan
