Sift the flour, baking soda, and salt
Melt the chocolate and milk in a double boiler until the chocolate melts
Combine half of the sugar and beat well
Beat the remaining sugar with the unsalted butter or margarine until smooth
Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition
Alternate adding the dry ingredients and the melted chocolate mixture, beating continuously
Grease 22cm diameter cake pans and bake in a moderate oven for 30-35 minutes
Cover with icing and, if desired, fill with whipped cream.
