Beat the butter and sugar until well combined
Add the eggs one at a time, beating after each addition
Add the flour and baking powder, mixing until a smooth batter forms
Grease and flour a baking dish, then roll out the dough to fit the dish
Prick the dough with a fork and bake in a medium oven for 10 minutes
Let cool
Beat the egg whites until stiff, then add the sugar and vanilla, mixing well. Reserve
Cut the marmalade into thin slices, spread over the cooled cake, and top with a meringue mixture
Sprinkle with chopped nuts, if desired, and bake in a medium oven until golden.
