Preheat the oven to 350°F
Beat the sugar and butter together until light and fluffy
Add the egg yolks one at a time, beating well after each addition, until the mixture is smooth and creamy
Gradually add the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and milk, mixing until just combined
Beat the egg whites until stiff peaks form, then fold them into the batter
Pour the batter into a greased 9-inch round cake pan
Bake at 350°F for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean
Let cool slightly and then remove from the pan
