2 tablespoons of butter or margarine
1 tablespoon of olive oil
1 pound ground beef cut into cubes
all-purpose flour
1/2 pound linguiça sausage cut into thick slices
1/2 cup finely chopped onion
2 cups water
5 tomatoes, seeded and chopped
1 bay leaf
salt and black pepper to taste

In a large Dutch oven, melt the butter or margarine and olive oil
Dredge the meat cubes in flour, add them to the pot, and cook over low heat until browned
Remove the meat from the pot and set it aside
Discard excess fat, add the linguiça and onion, and cook until they're tender
Add the water, tomatoes, bay leaf, salt, and pepper
Stir well
Return the reserved meat to the pot, cover, and simmer for 45 minutes or until the meat is tender
Serve with polenta sprinkled with Parmesan cheese.
