Layer of Vanilla
1 tablespoon gelatin, unsweetened
1/4 cup cold milk
1/2 cup hot milk, almost boiling
1 egg
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup heavy cream, fresh or from a carton
3/4 cup cubed ice or crushed ice
Layer of Chocolate
1 tablespoon gelatin, unsweetened
1/4 cup cold milk
1/2 cup hot milk, almost boiling
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
1/2 cup mild dark chocolate, broken into pieces
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup heavy cream, fresh or from a carton
3/4 cup cubed ice or crushed ice
Layer of Vanilla
1 tablespoon gelatin, unsweetened
1/4 cup cold milk
1/2 cup hot milk, almost boiling
1 egg

1/2 cup heavy cream, fresh or from a carton

Layer of Chocolate
1 tablespoon gelatin, unsweetened
1/4 cup cold milk
1/2 cup hot milk, almost boiling
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
1/2 cup mild dark chocolate, broken into pieces
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup heavy cream, fresh or from a carton
3/4 cup cubed ice or crushed ice
Start with the layer of vanilla
In a blender, pour in the cold milk and sprinkle gelatin
Tamp and blend at low speed until the gelatin is dissolved
Remove the tamper and add the hot milk
Continue blending until the gelatin is fully dissolved
Wipe down the sides with a plastic spatula and blend again
Add the egg, sugar, and vanilla extract
Tamp and blend again
Add the heavy cream and cubed ice, one at a time
Blend until the ice is melted
Pour immediately into 6 large or 8 small molds
Clean out the blender and make the layer of chocolate: in the blender, pour in the cold milk and sprinkle gelatin
Tamp and blend at low speed until the gelatin is dissolved
Remove the tamper and add the hot milk
Tamp again and continue blending until the gelatin is fully dissolved
Wipe down the sides with a plastic spatula and blend again
Add the egg, sugar, and chocolate pieces
Blend at high speed until smooth
Add vanilla extract, heavy cream, and cubed ice, one at a time
Blend until the ice is melted
Pour immediately over the layer of vanilla
Let it set for about 15 minutes before serving
If desired, garnish with whipped cream.
