a teaspoon of vanilla essence

Melt the milk, sugar, and flour in a saucepan, stirring constantly until golden brown
Remove from heat, still stirring, and add the milk
Let it cool completely, then stir in the granulated sugar crystals until almost impossible to mix with a wooden spoon
Add the vanilla essence
Spread (now they're set) over the cake
