Mix the gelatin with 1 1/2 cups of cold water, milk, sugar, and coffee
Heat over low heat, stirring constantly, until the gelatin dissolves
Beat the egg whites slightly and add a little of the warm mixture
Combine the egg whites with the remaining warm mixture and cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture coats the back of a spoon
Remove from heat and stir in vanilla
Refrigerate until it thickens slightly
Fold in beaten egg whites
Pour into 6 ramekins or a compote dish and refrigerate until firm
Serve chilled after 6 to 7 hours.
