Place the sugar in a saucepan, add the milk and mix well
Bring to low heat, stirring constantly, without letting it boil over, until the sugar is dissolved
Let it simmer, not stirring anymore, until it reaches the hard-ball stage
Remove from heat, add the butter or margarine and beat until firm
Add the vanilla and shredded coconut and pour into a well-greased baking dish
Let it cool and cut into squares.
