If using fresh asparagus, peel it from the tips down, pulling off the skin
Cook in boiling salted water (reserve the liquid for soup), then strain all the water
Arrange on a baking dish or Pyrex untainted with butter or margarine, sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese and cover with white sauce
Place some small pieces of butter on top, and bake in a hot oven for about 10 minutes, until golden brown on top.
