1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract
2 1/4 cups of all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons of baking powder
1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg (optional)

Beat the butter or margarine and sugar in a bowl until well combined
Add the egg, milk, and vanilla extract and beat until smooth
Sift the flour with the baking powder and nutmeg (if using) and add to the mixture
Mix well and divide into two portions
Cover and refrigerate for 1 hour
Roll out each portion of dough on a floured surface to about 3 mm thick, or 6 mm if you prefer thicker cookies
Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes from the dough and place on an ungreased baking sheet
Bake in a moderate oven (170°C) for 7-8 minutes for thin cookies and 10-12 minutes for thicker ones
Remove from the oven before they cool, and let cool completely.
