1.5 pounds ground beef, finely ground
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
8 tablespoons olive oil
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 large onion, finely chopped (12 ounces)
4 slices of bread, cut into 1-inch cubes and soaked in 1/3 cup milk
1.75 cups shredded ham (14 ounces)
1 package of cream cheese (11.5 ounces)
For the sauce
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 medium tomatoes, finely chopped (12 ounces)
1/2 teaspoon salt or to taste
1 dash cayenne pepper

For the sauce

Mix the ground beef in a medium bowl and season with salt and black pepper
Set aside
In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over high heat until the onion is charred and starting to brown
Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute
Remove from heat and add the ground beef
Mix well and divide into two portions
Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C)
With one portion of the meat mixture, line the bottom and sides of a 9-inch round baking dish with cooking spray
Fill with the remaining meat mixture
Top with cream cheese and cover with the other portion of the meat mixture
Bake for 40 minutes or until golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean
Drain any excess liquid from the baking dish and remove from oven
Makes about 495 calories per serving
Note: To freeze, let cool and wrap in aluminum foil without the sauce
Reheat in the oven when ready to serve.
