Heat the milk almost to a boil
In another part, mix together the cornstarch and 2/3 cup sugar
Gradually add the hot milk, whisking constantly
Cook over low heat, stirring until thickened
Beat the egg yolks
Add a little of the warm pudding mixture, mix well, and add to the remaining pudding in the pan
Continue cooking for a few minutes, stirring
Let it cool slightly
Assemble layers of cookies, banana slices, and pudding, in a medium-sized square or rectangular baking dish, finishing with pudding
Beat the egg whites until frothy and gradually add 1/3 cup sugar, beating until stiff peaks form
Place the meringue on top of the pudding
Bake in a preheated moderate oven (170°C) for about 15 minutes or until lightly golden
Serve warm with a spoonful of jelly
