Mix together the sugar, gelatin, and salt
Add the egg yolks and milk, then cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until the mixture reaches a simmer
Cool the mixture in a bowl filled with cold water, allowing it to thicken slightly
Whisk in the whipped cream and vanilla extract
Pour the mixture into an ungreased 1-liter mold
Chill in the refrigerator for about 4 hours or until firm
Décorate with fresh fruit, such as strawberries or blueberries, sliced
Serves 8
For a variation, add 3 tablespoons of strong brewed coffee to the mixture before cooking
Garnish with chopped nuts.
