Scrub the figs under running water
Cut them in half lengthwise and set aside
Melt 3/4 cup of butter in a large non-stick skillet
Add the figs, cinnamon sticks, and star anise pods
Cook over low heat until the figs are tender and have a dark golden-brown color
Shake the skillet occasionally to prevent burning and take care not to burn the figs
Remove from heat, sprinkle with salt and black pepper, and mix gently
Cover, let it rest for 5 minutes, and serve warm as an accompaniment to roasted meats in general.
