Chop the tomatoes, onion, carrot, bay leaf, and salt
Cook over low heat for 1 hour
Midway through cooking, season with sugar and salt
Remove from heat, blend in a blender, then strain through a fine-mesh sieve
Return to heat until thickened
Add pepper and serve.
