Preheat the oven to a moderate temperature (170°C)
Fry the onions in butter for 5 minutes, until they're soft
Arrange them in a 20cm diameter tart pan; sprinkle with salt and black pepper
Gently break the eggs over the onions, sprinkle them lightly with salt and black pepper, and then with breadcrumbs
Arrange the slices of cheddar cheese on top
Bake it uncovered for about 10 minutes, or until the eggs are cooked to your liking
Cook in four portions.
