Do this three days in advance
Prepare the glaze: mix confectioner's sugar, tartar cream, and egg whites with an electric mixer on low speed until well combined
Increase the speed and beat until stiff peaks form
Place 1/2 cup of glaze in a bowl, leaving the remaining glaze covered with plastic wrap
Reserve the two glazes, tightly sealed with plastic wrap
Prepare the cake: cream butter or margarine with confectioner's sugar and eggs
Sift flour with baking powder and add to the mixture, alternating with milk, until well combined
Beat egg whites until snowy white and fold gently into the batter
Pour into a 34x22 cm greased pan and bake in a moderate oven (170°C) for 40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean
Cut the cake in half lengthwise, then into 8 pieces
To decorate: spread green glaze over all sides of the cake, excluding the base
Keep the glaze tightly sealed in an airtight container
Let the pieces sit for 1 1/2 hours
Cover the base and let it sit for 1 1/2 hours
Place white glaze in a piping bag and decorate with loops
Use silver balls and red candy canes to decorate
Let it set for 1 hour
Make a hole with a needle, thread a nylon string, and tie a bow for hanging
Make 8 gift boxes.
