In a medium saucepan, combine the peanut butter, Karo syrup, and water
Heat over low heat and stir until the peanut butter is fully dissolved
When it starts to simmer, remove the lid and let it cook for 5 minutes
Remove from heat and let it set without stirring until it reaches the molasses stage
Add the peanuts, butter or margarine, and cook over low heat, stirring occasionally, until it reaches the hard-ball stage
Remove from heat and stir in the baking soda and vanilla extract
Pour onto a greased surface
Let cool and break into pieces
