4 tablespoons of butter or margarine
1 1/2 pounds of beef cut into cubes
1 minced garlic clove
3 chopped onions
4 tablespoons of all-purpose flour
1/2 cup of red wine
1/2 cup of water
2 teaspoons of salt
1/2 teaspoon of black pepper
1 bay leaf
1 cup of strong brewed coffee

Melt the butter or margarine in a large skillet
Add the beef and brown it on all sides
Add the garlic and onions; cook until the onions are tender but not caramelized
Remove the beef and onions
Mix the flour with the remaining butter or margarine from the skillet
Add the wine, water, seasonings, and coffee
Stir until the mixture thickens slightly
Return the beef and onions to the skillet
Cover and let it simmer for 1 hour and 30 minutes or until the beef is tender
Serve in 6 portions.
