4 medium-sized potatoes

2 tablespoons of butter or margarine
1/2 to 1 cup of hot milk
Salt and black pepper to taste

Peel the potatoes and cut them into pieces
Cover with boiling hot water, add the onion, cover and cook until the potatoes are tender but still firm
Drain well and discard the onion
Heat low again and shake the potatoes over it to dry them thoroughly
Mash the potatoes very well with a potato masher or electric mixer
Place back in the pan and heat over low
Add the butter or margarine and gradually add the milk, beating continuously with a wooden spoon or electric mixer
Season with salt and black pepper.
