Medium-sized red cabbage, grated

Medium-sized red cabbage, grated

Cook the grated red cabbage with the apples and water in a pot
Add apple, salt, and cloves
Cover and simmer over low heat for 45 minutes if needed
Remove the cloves, add vinegar and butter or margarine, and stir until the butter or margarine is melted
Taste and adjust seasoning as needed
To freeze: place in an airtight container, let cool, cover, and seal hermetically
Place in freezer
To serve: thaw overnight in refrigerator, then reheat with a wooden spoon while stirring occasionally
Serve 4 to 6 portions.
