Melt the 4 tablespoons of butter or margarine in a pot
Add the onion and a pinch of salt
Cover and let it simmer slowly until the onion is soft, about 20 minutes
While that's happening, prepare the sauce by melting the 2 tablespoons of butter or margarine
Add the flour and stir well
Season to taste with salt and black pepper
Add 3 cups of milk and cook, stirring, until it thickens
Add the onion and remaining milk
Check the seasoning and serve hot.
