In a large pot, place 1 cup of water and bring it to a boil
Add the well-rinsed and drained barley, and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 15 to 20 minutes or until the liquid has been absorbed
Add 6 cups of beef broth, sliced onions, and washed lentils
Bring it to a boil, then partially cover and simmer slowly for 1 hour, or until the lentils and barley are cooked
Add salt, black pepper, and paprika
Simmer for an additional 15 minutes
If desired, add the remaining cup of beef broth for a more liquid soup
Serves 6.
