1 tablespoon of baking soda
1 cup of buttermilk
1 cup of butter or margarine
2 cups of sugar
2 eggs
juice from 2 oranges
zest from 2 oranges
4 and 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour, sifted
2 teaspoons of active dry yeast
1 teaspoon of vanilla
1 tablespoon of baking soda

Mix the baking soda with buttermilk and reserve
Beat the butter or margarine, sugar, eggs, orange juice, and zest together
Sift the flour with yeast and add to the mixture, alternating with buttermilk
Add the vanilla and mix well
Spread the mixture into two small baking dishes
Bake in a moderate oven (170°C) for about 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean
Let it cool and then cut into bars
