Place the milk, sugar, and butter in a saucepan over low heat, stirring constantly until it reaches a thread-like consistency
If using eggs, remove from heat and let cool slightly before adding to the coconut mixture
If not using eggs, you can add the coconut to the warm saucepan
Stir well and return to heat, stirring constantly and scraping the sides of the pan
Cook until thickened
Let cool, add vanilla extract, and stir well
Remove from heat, let cool completely
Grease hands with butter and shape into small balls with the sweet treat
Let rest for 1 hour, then roll in shredded coconut and place in paper cups
