Melt 1 cup of sugar in a saucepan over medium heat until it turns dark brown; remove from heat, add boiling water and stir until the sugar is fully dissolved
Let cool
Sift together flour, yeast, and salt
Beat butter or margarine with remaining sugar until light and fluffy
Add egg yolks one at a time, beating well after each addition and then add vanilla
Alternate adding dry ingredients and burnt sugar, beating continuously
Finally, add beaten egg whites
Bake in a moderate oven for 30-35 minutes
Remove from the oven and let cool
Serve as desired
