2 cups of all-purpose flour
3 teaspoons of active dry yeast
1/4 teaspoon of salt
1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon of whole cloves
1/2 cup of unsalted butter or margarine
1 cup of milk or heavy cream
1 egg and 2 egg yolks
3/4 cup of granulated sugar
2 cups of all-purpose flour
3 teaspoons of active dry yeast
1/4 teaspoon of salt

Sift together the flour, yeast, salt, and spices three times
Beat the butter with the sugar until light and fluffy
Add the beaten egg and egg yolks and beat well
Alternate adding the sifted ingredients and milk, ending with a smooth batter
Pour into a greased pan and top with:
2 egg whites
1 cup of granulated sugar
1/2 cup of chopped nuts
Beat the egg whites until stiff peaks form
Add the sugar to the egg whites and beat until stiff and glossy
Pipe onto the cake and sprinkle with chopped nuts
Bake in a moderate oven for 40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
