Juice of 1 lemon

Peel the pears and remove the core and seeds
Cut them into chunks and drizzle with lemon juice
Set aside
Prepare a light syrup: combine sugar and water, bring to a simmer
Cook until the syrup is slightly thickened
Rinse the pear chunks in running water, drain well, add salt, and submerge the fruit in the syrup
Add the star anise and cook until the pears are tender
Serve warm or chilled with whipped cream.
