Combine milk, sugar, salt, and vegetable shortening in a saucepan
Heat only until the shortening has melted
Let cool
Sprinkle yeast over warm water in a large bowl
Add the cooled milk mixture, eggs, and 2 cups of flour
Beat until smooth
Gradually add the remaining flour until the dough is soft and pliable
Place on a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes, adding only as much flour as needed to prevent sticking
Shape into a ball and place in a greased bowl
Cover and let rise for one hour
Punch down the dough, then quickly knead and let rest for 5 minutes before using in subsequent recipes.
