(1) Bring the water to a simmer in a saucepan over low heat until it starts to boil
(2) Stir the water with a large spoon to create a whirlpool in the center of the saucepan
(3) Crack the egg into a separate container and carefully place it into the center of the whirlpool
Cook the egg as the water continues to simmer, keeping it centered in the whirlpool
(4) Remove the egg with a slotted spoon delicately when the whites are set and the yolks still runny
Serve the egg on toasted French bread and season with salt and black pepper
