Cut the garlic head into slices, but do not separate them. Mix butter or margarine with salt (or garlic paste). Spread this mixture over all the cut parts. Wrap the garlic head in resistant aluminum foil, pressing it shut tightly. Bake in a moderate oven for 20 minutes.
