Mix the cornstarch, flour, and salt in a saucepan
Gradually add the milk, stirring well
Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and comes to a boil
Let it simmer for 1 minute
Remove from heat
Slowly pour half of the mixture into the egg yolks lightly beaten
Add the remaining mixture back into the saucepan
Simmer for another minute, stirring constantly
Remove from heat
Add the softened butter and pure vanilla extract
Pour into individual serving dishes
Serve warm or chilled, with whipped cream if desired.
