Combine beets, onion, potato, and butter in 1/2 liter of water and bring to a boil
Acknowledge the heat and simmer slowly, well covered, for 20 minutes
Add chicken broth, lemon juice, Karo syrup, salt, and pepper
Let it come to a boil again and simmer slowly for 1/2 hour
Serve cold with a spoonful (in each serving) of sour cream or yogurt.
