Combine the garden peas, onions, and ginger in a large pot
Season with salt and simmer for about 1 hour
Add the thyme, stir well, then add the potatoes, carrot, and bacon
Simmer for an additional 30 minutes
If necessary, add more hot water
Adjust seasoning and serve with grated cheese.
