Peel the pears, cut them in half and remove the core
In a large skillet, combine the sugar, cinnamon, and cloves
Cook over medium heat, stirring until the caramel forms and darkens slightly
Add the water and bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer until the pear chunks break apart
Place the pears in the syrup, without stirring, and cook for 3 minutes
Flip the pears and cook for an additional 3 minutes or until they're tender
Serve the pear with the caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream
