For the meat sauce
"3 tablespoons of olive oil"
1 large onion (150g) finely chopped
4 cloves of garlic, minced
500g beef (patinho or coxão duro), ground
1 calabresa pepper (150g), peeled and ground
1 beef broth tablet dissolved in 1 1/2 cups of boiling water (360ml)
1 tablespoon of salt
1/2 teaspoon of sweet basil
For the white sauce
2 tablespoons of butter
1/3 cup of all-purpose flour (40g)
2 cups of milk (480ml)
1/4 cup of grated Parmesan cheese (30g)
300g cooked lasagna noodles
2 cups of grated mozzarella cheese (200g)

Prepare the meat sauce: In a medium pan, heat the olive oil over medium heat
Add the onion and garlic and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are soft (about 5 minutes)
Add the beef and pepper and cook, stirring occasionally, until the beef is browned (about 5 minutes)
Add the broth, salt, and sweet basil and stir to combine
Remove from heat and set aside
Prepare the white sauce: In a medium pan, melt the butter over low heat
Add the flour and increase the heat to high
Cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture is lightly browned (about 2 minutes)
Gradually add the milk, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens slightly (about 5 minutes)
Remove from heat and set aside
Preheat the oven to 180°C (medium)
Place a small amount of the meat sauce in a 22cm x 29cm baking dish
Top with one-third of the lasagna noodles and one-third of the remaining meat sauce
Cover with one-third of the white sauce and sprinkle with one-third of the mozzarella cheese
Repeat the layers two more times, starting with the lasagna noodles
Cover with aluminum foil and bake in a preheated oven at 180°C (medium) until the lasagna is cooked through (about 40 minutes)
Serve hot
