Combine the onion, broccoli, and half a cup of chicken broth in a saucepan
Cover and cook over high heat for 6 to 9 minutes or until the broccoli is tender
Stir once
Reserve one cup of cooked broccoli and set aside
Blend the mixture in a processor or blender until smooth
Return the mixture to the saucepan
Add the remaining ingredients, cover, and cook over high heat for 2 to 6 minutes or until heated through but not boiling
Combine the reserved broccoli with the soup and serve
